Supporting small island developing states (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs) to implement The IMO GHG Strategy

The Issue
LDCs and SIDS are amongst those countries that are significantly impacted by climate change. They are economically heavily reliant on their maritime transport and they may disproportionately be impacted due to the implementation of the IMO GHG Strategy. There have been frequent calls by Member State at IMO to support these countries from a variety of perspectives including capacity building in order to develop expertise needed by these countries to tackle these issues.
The Solution
GHG SMART’s main aim is to support SIDS and LDCs with the implementation of the IMO GHG Strategy via building sufficient human capacity in these countries. This includes development of a comprehensive training programme, intended for participants from SIDS and LDCs. The program will be implemented by the Republic of Korea. The project also includes post-training monitoring, evaluation and refinement.

Impact
All SIDS and LDCs will be invited to send delegations to the Republic of Korea to benefit not only from the in-class training but also via field visits and familiarisation with the industry as a unique feature of this programme.
National maritime GHG emissions champions will be trained for participating SIDS and LDCs on all aspects of the IMO GHG Strategy to enable these countries to actively take part in policy making, national action planning and raising finance to implement the national action plans.
Lead to more active participation of SIDS and LDCs in international and IMO prolixity making debates and decision making.
